Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods Offers Fundraiser Opportunity: Tree Planting Leaves a Legacy
Paauilo, HI—August 4, 2010—Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods (HLH) has developed a fundraiser initiative to help schools and organizations raise money while improving the planet and benefitting Hawaii’s unique ecosystem. The HLH’s Koa Legacy Tree program makes it possible to honor an individual, memorialize a loved one or special event by planting a native Hawaiian Koa tree in their honor. Each Koa Legacy will honor the person it was planted for by giving the gift of cleaner air, water, and by providing a habitat for native birds. During a 50-year lifetime, a tree can generate $31,250 worth of oxygen, provides $62,000 worth of air pollution control, recycles $37,500 worth of water, and controls $31,250 worth of soil erosion.
Hawaiian Koa trees are found nowhere else on Earth and the wood is prized by artisans and musical instrument makers around the world. The wood is one of the most expensive in the world due to its small geographical growth area. Much of Koa’s native habitat has been turned into cattle pastures in the last century. Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods is working to create a sustainable supply of Koa for its investors while also reforesting areas of its 2,700-acre plantation on the Big Island of Hawaii.
“The Legacy Tree fundraiser is a great opportunity for schools and organizations to raise money and green awareness among children,” says Tiffany DeEtte Shafto, Special Projects Manager for Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods. “This fundraiser will make students aware of their role as stewards of the land—and best yet, it’s calorie free.”
The Koa Legacy Tree program offers a way for everyone to get involved in the reforestation of Hawaii. All fundraiser participants will learn about the only tropical forests in the United States and how the planting of trees has a positive effect on our global environment. Since they grow and sequester carbon year-round, two mature Koa Legacy Trees supply enough oxygen annually to support a family of four.
HLH provides personalized certificates of planting for each Koa Legacy Tree buyer, complete with the GPS coordinates and unique RFID tagging of the tree. In time, these Legacy Trees will be viewable from space using Google Earth. More About Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods: The Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods (HLH) Plantation is located 34 miles north of Hilo, above historic Umikoa Village on the slopes of Mauna Kea. The 2,700-acre sustainable Koa forestry project will support the growth of 1.3 million rare tropical hardwood trees, primarily Koa, indigenous only to Hawaii. The planting site was once a magnificent Koa forest and the personal property of King Kamehameha I. This old growth forest was almost lost to clear-cut harvesting and cattle grazing, but Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods is working to return this site to its former glory.
