Grades of Koa

It is important to note that the cost of Koa is affected by several factors, including quality, size, and availability of the wood. This is a rare and highly sought-after tropical hardwood that only grows in Hawaii, and as a result, it can be expensive. According to some reports, old growth Koa wood sells regularly at $50 per board foot or even more for highly figured or rare pieces. In some cases, the cost of Koa wood can exceed $200 per board foot.

This Koa contains highly desirable features. It presents unique intricate figuring and chatoyancy with a 3D affect that makes it appear to be moving as the viewing angle changes. This grade is reserved for the most premium uses such as musical instruments and fine furniture.

This grade of Koa is very high quality, with strong grain and color. It has excellent figure and may have some chatoyancy that enhances its natural beauty. There may be some minor anomalies (small knots or burls), but they do not detract from the overall appearance of the wood. This grade is suitable for a wide range of uses such as cabinetry, furniture, and other high-end products.

Select Grade

 

Select Grade

Select grade Koa has good color and figure and can be used for less demanding applications like trim and millwork. It may contain defects such as larger knots, small cracks, and other blemishes. It may also have a lighter color than higher grades of Koa wood. While the wood may not have the same striking appearance as the higher grades, it can still provide the same durability and functionality.
