Eco Rotary Volunteer Day March 18, 2023
Mahalo @rotary_d5000 @pacificbuddhistacademy !
It was the day after St. Patrick's Day and Eco Rotary of Kaka'ako and their team of volunteers were greening up Hawaii. They added another 243 native Hawaiian trees on a hillside overlooking the Rotary District 5000 Legacy Forest in Lai'e. Totalling 9,420 native trees that Rotary volunteers have planted by hand! These hala, ma'o, lonomea, and wiliwili plants have a good chance of surviving with the care from the Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation field crew and a little luck!
In addition, 2 students and their teacher from Pacific Buddhist Academy join in the fun! Pacific Buddhist Academy not only educates young people to excel in college, but teaches them that their words, thoughts and actions promote peace.
The legacy lives on as Field Supervisor, Tellus Fix, gives field crew worker, Shane, the opportunity to demonstrate to a group of Rotary volunteers on the fine art of planting a tree. You can't just stick a tree in a hole in the ground and hope it will live. Planting trees can be one of the most effective ways to mitigate global warming and reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide. In order for that to happen, the planted tree needs to survive.
Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative is grateful to their volunteers and we want their hard work and efforts to be successful. The preparation and knowledge of our HLRI Field Crew is appreciated and contributes to the success of our reforestation efforts!
